Numbers can only take you so far. It’s easy to compare numbers and specifications in a table, crunch them in a spreadsheet, and tell people that you know about something. But, in the real world, there’s a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Facts and figures can give you some knowledge, but you can only gain wisdom through experience.
This is basically what I experienced recently at the first operational EV charging station from GM’s partnership with Pilot/Flying J truck stops and EVgo to install 2,000 charging stalls at 500 locations across the United States. I decided to use one just outside of Knoxville, Tennessee along I-40.
US public fast-charging network EVgo (Nasdaq: EVGO) has reached more than 1 million registered customer accounts, doubling its 500,000 account mark in October 2022.
EVgo reports that its customer accounts have skyrocketed, increasing by 400% since April 2020. This momentum is a good indicator of growing EV adoption rates in the US and increased demand for public charging infrastructure.
It’s “a threshold that truly makes my spirits soar,” Cathy Zoi, former CEO of EVgo Inc., said on an earnings call in September. “We believe the go-forward picture on network profitability is stronger than ever.” EVgo operates about 1,000 stations in the US; in September, almost one-third of them were humming at least 20% of the time.
